This article might be useful for people who are aspiring to come over Japan for work. The list of things which are required to do after coming to Japan are as follows
1) Before landing to Japan do your booking online for shared house
Oak House ( https://www.oakhouse.jp/mypage/login?lang=eng )
Sakura house ( https://www.sakura-house.com/en )
2) Once you land in Japan you will get a residence card at immigration counter on airport. This card is very important and you need to carry it always where you go in Japan. The advantage is till the validity of this card you dont require any visa.
3) There is a baggage drop counter (4000 or depending upon your luggage) in the arrival hall of the Narita airport. You can travel without luggage freely to your destination and your baggage will be delivered.
Also you can get temporary SIM (2000) if needed. I would suggest rather taking this SIM just activate your country's roaming plan for a month.
You can get PASMO/SUICA card as well at airport station. (this card you can buy afterwards too)
There are airport limousine buses which drops you to the city (there are various stops so you can check there itself) these are very convenient. (around 3500 is the charge)
4) Register temporary address on residence card by going to the nearest ward office of where you are staying initially.
Ward office people doesn't speak english but still they will make sure your address gets printed on it. Only thing to makes sure is get a correct address with you.
5) Once you get an address then you can apply for a bank account. Shinsei bank is english friendly bank but you can open a bank account depending upon your choice.
6) Once you have residence card with address and bank account then you can apply for Japanese SIM card. This is must do thing as everywhere you will require japanese phone no. There are many operators and offers
Docomo, AU,Softbank (bit costly)
Rakuten mobile
Iijmio
y mobile
modal
7) Now if you are searching for an apartment for stay then there are UR apartments which are provided by Japanese government. They are very good, cheap with no key money and big deposit. For rakuten guys there are certain offers. Type are
1/2/3/4 LDK
1/2/3 DK
1/2 K
To get an apartment you require an agent from UR (you can connect with me if you need contact of these agents)
Also you would need residence card, mobile and residence certificate (Juminhyo) which you will get from ward office and your salary certificate from your employer.
It is suggested that choose a location for an apartment which is max 45 mins travel from your office. (door to door travel)
8) Once you planned to move to an apartment then you need to buy all household stuff. New stuff here is very costly so you can join sayonara sales FB group where people provide their used stuff in chaper rate or there are few good shops where you can get everything required
Treasure factory
Seconds street
Recycle shop (there are many you need to search) ( I got it from Miyazakidai. Can provide details if needed)
Rakuten second hand online shop
9) Nitori or Ikea are shops where you can get kitchenware or bedroom things in cheaper rate
10) Gas and electricity are provided usually by Tokyo gas and Tokyo power and that will be taken care by your agent
There are 2 types of gas here
LPG (Orange color tube)
City gas (white color tube)
This is required when you are buying a gas range.
11) The internet is provided by various operators. Check in your apartment which internet provider is there and you can apply. Usually in UR apartments there is AU Hikari KDDI internet and it is very good. (Details can be provide as per request)
12) bills of all these things like electricity, gas, internet etc can be paid at nearest convenient stores. (lawson/711/mini stop/aeon/familymart)
13) Transfer of money to your local country - There are banks through which you can transfer the money to your local country but it is bit costly. Transferwise is good option for such transfer.
